Wedding cakes traditionally date back to ancient Greece, when newlywed couples would share crushed sesame cakes to ensure fertility.
It progressed on through to the Middle Ages, when guests would crumble wheat cakes over the newly married couple’s heads to wish them good fortune and children.
The wheat cake turned into a sweet dessert cake in sixteenth century England, which was promptly changed by the French into the tiered and sugar-covered cakes that we are familiar with today.
Things to Think About
Today, wedding cakes have become the centerpiece for the whole reception. Here are some thing to think about when choosing yours:
- Style: Your wedding cake should represent your wedding’s style and theme, so it might be a good idea to wait until you’ve decided on your gown style and reception decor.These will serve as the blueprint for the design and structure of your cake. Styles can be drawn from a myriad of places, such as the season, your theme, the embroidery or lace on your wedding dress, etc.
- Shape: Round tier cakes are classic, but you could have lots of fun with oval, square, octagon or even hexagon shapes. Your options are limited only by your imagination (and your budget!)
- Color: White is always a great color to use, but how about mixing in some of the colors of your wedding party or bouquets of flowers.
I have to throw in a little aside here about my sister’s wedding. A relative made my sister’s cake (she regularly took cake decorating courses and was up to the challenge) and it turned out fabulous. She made beautiful icing flowers in the color of the dark burgundy dress that I was wearing as her MOH.
She was telling us that she was fearful at first that she wouldn’t be able to match the dress color because it was so deep, but she did!
The down side was that she had to use so much food coloring that it was extremely plain to tell who had cake later on in the evening as everyone who did had burgundy lips, tongue and, even in some cases, teeth.
It was actually kind of funny to see (especially the guys) but you know what everyone had a good laugh and it became one of those memorable kind of wedding moments.
